What is a Lake Superior Agate?

Lava once flowed through the area of Lake Superior. As it cooled, water filled the air pockets. This water contained minerals and deposited layers of quartz that then hardened. Lake Superior agates are known for their reddish color and white banding layers. Minnesota designated the Lake Superior Agate as the state gemstone in 1969.
